The Directorate General of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı) has announced that more than 140,000 irregular migrants were deported in 2024, marking a significant milestone in Turkey’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration. This record-breaking figure highlights the effectiveness of Turkey’s robust policies and its unwavering commitment to maintaining national security and public order.
In a recent statement shared via its official social media platforms, the Directorate emphasized the role of Mobile Migration Points (Mobil Göç Noktası Araçları), which have become pivotal in the fight against irregular migration. Introduced in July 2023, these mobile units are now operational in all 81 provinces across the country, with their total number increased to 270.
“During the initial three months of using the Mobile Migration Points, 74.5 out of every 100 foreigners checked were identified as irregular migrants,” the Directorate noted. “This figure has remarkably dropped to 2.7% in the last month, showcasing the substantial impact of these efforts. We will continue our fight against irregular migration with the same determination, operating our Mobile Migration Points 24/7 in the coming year.”
The Directorate’s statement further underscored Turkey’s collaborative approach to tackling migrant smuggling, involving law enforcement agencies, including the General Directorate of Security, the Gendarmerie General Command, and the Coast Guard Command.
Through coordinated operations and inspections, such as the ‘Kalkan’ operations, migrant smugglers have been apprehended and brought to justice. Simultaneously, the processes to repatriate identified irregular migrants have been expedited. These measures span across the entirety of Turkey, encompassing all border gates and maritime territories.
“All deportation processes, from identifying irregular migrants to holding them in administrative detention at Removal Centers, have been carried out in strict compliance with human rights, legal standards, and our nation’s values,” the Directorate emphasized.
The effectiveness of these measures has resulted in record-breaking deportation figures, with 2023 witnessing the highest number of deportations in Turkey’s history. This record was surpassed in 2024, as the number of deportations exceeded 140,000—a clear indication of Turkey’s enhanced capabilities in enforcing its migration policies.
